Manual Lymphatic Drainage

Lymphatic massage therapy is great for well-being, as part of a detox, and can also promote healing and speed recovery from injury or post-surgery.

Rhythmic movements in the direction of lymphatic flow which gently stretch the skin are used to stimulate the lymphatic system relieving congestion.

It can promote healing post-surgery, injury, burns and more. It can help to improve chronic conditions such as sinusitis, rheumatoid arthritis, whiplash, migraines. It is detoxifying and relaxing. It can help to reduce pain.

Helen has also received further training to help patients with lymphoedema and where lymph nodes are dysfunctional or have been removed by redirecting the flow to other areas of the body.

What to expect on your visit

Before any initial treatment a full consultation will be carried out. Helen will ask questions regarding your general health and previous medical history, these questions are important to ensure the correct treatment is given. The treatment is carried out directly on the skin, therefore be prepared to undress. This is also important as it avoids any clothing restrictions such as waistbands and seams. You will be covered with a light-weight blanket throughout the treatment and only the area being treated with be exposed.

After your treatment, to ensure you gain maximum benefit, the following is recommended:

  • Avoid wearing restrictive clothing
  • Continue to wear any compression garments you’ve been advised to wear and for the specified period
  • Ensure you keep hydrated
  • Carry out self-treatment techniques
  • Maintain a good skin care routine
  • Regular exercise/activity – lymph requires muscle contraction, so movement is key. Walking helps to pump the fluid around, any movement is good.
  • Limit salty foods as this will increase fluid within the tissues.
